Wood Elves
A Wood Elf is the counterpart/ancestor of house-elves on their world of origin, who were inbred and bred to get into servitude. Wood elves on the other hand are more wild and free, connected to nature and fair healers. Wood elves stand a slight bit taller than average humans ranging from 5'7" to 6'6" in average, they have slightly pointed ears and overall are fairer in skin, eye and hair color.
They loathe servitude, due to what has been done to their brethren on their home world, and have developed a natural distaste. They are very loyal to their friends to the point of being extremely overprotective (and in some cases possessive). Wood Elves will feel more drawn to subjects such as Herbology, Survival, and Care of Magical Creatures and overall will do better in such subjects.
This race has only recently moved to the Riders world. Riders from this race will only have become Riders when they came to this world, this by an itching mark appearing upon their skin. If they decide to attend at one of the Towers the year they will attend will be determined by their level of knowledge on their racial magic and age.
Wood Elves generally live in small communes in forests, which they will fiercely protect. They originate from the Northern European countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark) on their home world, their native language is Norwegian.
Their social structure is one of equals and the only form of 'leadership' they have is a council of elders, which only convenes when needed for problems that affect their race as a whole.
Communes are generally inhabited by around 100 adults. If their population becomes larger than 120 adults some will either split off to form their own commune or will move to one of the other communities with a lower population.
Once every ten years they have a large festival so that they can mingle with other communes.
In general they don't care about possessions, items, currency.
While a sociable people, they have no problems with being on their own for extended periods of times.
Ageing - Once a wood elf reaches the age of 25 they stop ageing. They aren't immortal (they can get sick/get killed by normal means), they just stop ageing.
Bonding/Relationships: When a wood elf gets married (or bonded as they call it) it lasts for 1 year, after that year the couple can decide whether they want to remain together for another year, and so on and so forth. So while monogamous they do not necessarily bond for life. Due to the bonding lasting for 1 year official engagement is often short. Other races are welcomed, so half breeds are possible/likely. [This is not a requirement, these are old
cultural custom]:
Courtship: Basically comes down to being exclusive/not having sexual intercourse or romantic exchanges with others.
Engagement:Have been courting for at least 3 months.
The elf (or both elves) need to actually have feelings for the other person.
If parents of either party are still living they need to be met (when it comes to interracial marriage it is only required to meet the parent(s) of the wood elf)
If parents of at least one of the wood elves has been met/there are no parents to be met:
One or both people start seeing an arch they are required to go through. (Each of them will see a separate arch, no one else will be able to see said arch)
On the other side of the arch they will find a garden that represents the other person.
Within said garden they will find the closest living family member of the other person, this family member will have to grant permission for the engagement/bonding.
Engagement (usually) lasts about a month - in this time period, if it's the
first bonding/marriage for
both parties, the closest living relatives of the couple will come to an agreement over the dowry of the woman (sons generally move in with their spouses) The Dowry is generally seen as a custom and therefore usually there are no serious demands.
The bonding ceremony does
not take place before the dowry has been settled, if there is no dowry involved the ceremony is generally set for a month after permission for the engagement is gained.
If one or both parties don't have any living relatives the negotiations for the dowry will be with the person that has no living relatives.
The courtship/engagement can be broken off by either party at any time if they wish to do so.The Bonding Ceremony:With any of the bonding ceremonies there are 7 days of festivities, during which time the couple is not supposed to have intercourse, or even sleep in the same space. This because in Wood Elf culture a child being conceived on the night of the actual ceremony is seen as a token of luck and a blessing for the pair, the seven day wait is believed to ensure the best chances of doing so. For this same reason the festivities do not start until a week after the first day of the woman's last menstruation.
The ceremony itself is done in private and generally performed by one of the elders. It entails a blessing by said elder and a binding of their hands to one another, along with the couple speaking their own vows for the upcoming year. These vows are renewed each year the couple decides to remain bonded, but can be done in private without the need for a blessing from the elder or any festivities.
Children: Children are raised by both parents acting as co-parents, whether they are (still) bonded or not. If one of the parents dies their child will be raised by the remaining parent, if this parent dies the child will go to the next closest living relative. A child is considered an adult by their community when they reach the age of 18. It is not seen as shameful or weird if a child is conceived outside of a bonding between two parents, it is however expected that both parents take responsibility for the child.
Racial Traits: More agile, quiet, and faster than humans in general. Their magic is healing and/or plant/earth based, if they possess any magic to begin with. They are very much in tune with nature, can form special bonds with animals or the forest they live in.
